In a typical stand of trees, only a small percentage will have the ideal traits that growers seek. These elite trees are the most likely to produce offspring that also will have ideal traits. However, not all seeds from a tree will produce offspring similar to the parent.
This is where ArborGen makes a difference. Through our
propagation process, we can produce identical seedlings with traits desired by consumers, land owners, growers and wood processors.
Customers can choose varieties with improved productivity, straightness, and branching characteristics that will optimize the value of their land.
ArborGen has agreements with the nation’s leading wood producing companies and universities to develop their immature seeds into top performing trees.
In addition to producing the cells and seedlings through the ArborGen Testing Service, ArborGen coordinates field tests with the varieties on multiple sites in various tree production zones throughout the Southeastern United States.
To date, we’ve already delivered more than 9,000 varieties for customer testing on specific sites in the Southeast U.S. and South America. Participating companies will be able to select the best performers for large scale commercial production ideally suited for specific forest zone conditions.
