Planting season in the U.S. Southeast can be unpredictable. Warm days can quickly give way to freezing nights, and those temperature swings make timing — and preparation — critical to seedling survival and long-term stand performance.
At ArborGen, we know that successful planting doesn’t stop at delivery. Our role as your partner extends throughout the season, helping you navigate challenging conditions so your investment gets the strongest possible start.
Know When to Pause
If you’re planting during periods of volatile weather, extreme caution is essential. We strongly recommend avoiding planting when temperatures are projected to fall below 25°F the evening after planting. Seedlings — both bareroot and containerized — are especially vulnerable to freeze injury during this window, which can compromise establishment and future growth.
Knowing when not to plant is just as important as knowing when conditions are right.
Protecting Seedlings During Cold Events
When cold weather threatens, a few proactive decisions can make a meaningful difference:
- Avoid transporting seedlings in open-air trailers during below-freezing temperatures
- Do not leave seedlings onsite overnight when freezing conditions are expected
- Limit exposure to excessive wind, especially in freezing weather
- Do not plant while the ground is still frozen
- If planting must proceed, delay hand-planting until temperatures rise above freezing in the morning
These steps help protect seedling health during the most vulnerable phase — right before and immediately after planting.
