A successful planting season starts long before the first seedling goes in the ground. Proper handling, storage, and planting practices are critical to protecting seedling health, maximizing survival, and ensuring strong early growth.

At ArborGen, we view seedling care as a shared responsibility. From the nursery to the field, following proven best practices helps protect your investment and gives your trees the best possible start.

Start with Proper Handling

Seedlings are living plants — and they respond quickly to stress. From the moment they arrive:

  • Keep seedlings cool, shaded, and moist
  • Avoid unnecessary handling and rough treatment
  • Protect seedlings from wind and direct sunlight
  • Never allow roots or plugs to dry out

Small handling mistakes can lead to reduced survival, even when planting conditions appear favorable.

Store Seedlings Correctly

If seedlings cannot be planted immediately, proper storage is essential:

  • Store bareroot and containerized seedlings at recommended temperatures and plant as soon as possible
  • Avoid prolonged storage beyond recommended timeframes
  • Do not stack or compress packages in ways that could damage seedlings

Good storage practices preserve seedling vigor until planting can occur.

Planting Matters

Correct planting technique directly impacts early growth and long-term performance:

  • Plant at the proper depth — not too shallow, not too deep
  • Ensure roots are straight and fully extended, never “J-rooted”
  • Firm soil around the seedling to eliminate air pockets
  • Do not plant in frozen or excessively wet soils

Taking the time to plant correctly helps seedlings establish quickly and efficiently.
