Not All Seed Sources Are Created Equal
When you purchase seedlings from ArborGen, you can be confident that we have managed the process from initial genetic development to orchard production and nursery cultivation.
Unfortunately, that level of oversight is not standard across the industry.
Many seedling suppliers do not own or manage their own orchards. Instead, they purchase seed from outside sources, often through auctions or surplus seed sales. While there is nothing inherently wrong with purchasing seed, it can create challenges when it comes to transparency.
Because these growers are purchasing seed rather than managing the breeding and orchard process themselves, they may have limited visibility into the complete genetic history and performance data associated with that seed. Depending on the source, suppliers may also have limitations regarding the genetic information and performance data they can share with customers.
For landowners, this can make it more difficult to verify the origin, genetic makeup, and expected performance of the seedlings they are planting. Knowing where your genetics come from – and having access to the data behind them – provides greater confidence that the seedlings you purchase are aligned with your long-term management objectives.
Forest Genetics Begin Long Before the Nursery
Advanced forest genetics are the result of decades of research, testing, and tree improvement.
The process begins with selecting parent trees that demonstrate desirable characteristics such as superior growth, improved stem form, disease resistance, and overall productivity. These selections are then tested and evaluated across multiple environments before becoming part of a breeding program.
Because this process requires significant time and investment, the source of the seed matters just as much as the seedling itself.
Knowing where your genetics originate provides confidence that the product you are planting has been developed, tested, and selected with specific performance goals in mind.
Why Orchard Management Matters
Even when superior genetics are available, seed quality can be affected by how an orchard is managed.
Two of the most important factors influencing seed integrity are pollen control and pollen purity.
In Open Pollinated (OP) orchards, nature plays a significant role in the pollination process. This means orchard location is critical. Nearby stands of nonimproved pine can introduce outside pollen, potentially reducing the genetic gain expected from the orchard.
Pollen contamination can also influence traits beyond growth and yield. For example, pollen from trees adapted to different geographic regions may affect characteristics such as cold tolerance. As a result, the minimum winter temperatures a seedling can safely withstand may differ from what would be expected if the orchard’s intended parentage had been maintained. This is one reason orchard location, management, and pollen control are so important to maintaining genetic integrity.
Mass Control Pollinated (MCP®) seedlings are different.
With MCP seedlings, parentage is intentionally selected and controlled. Each cross is carefully managed to ensure the resulting seed contains the exact genetic combination intended by the breeding program. There is no uncertainty regarding pollen source or parentage, providing a higher level of confidence in the genetic potential of the seedling.
