CURRENT POSITIONS

Research Associate II (Lead Formulator) - Ridgeville, South Carolina

DESCRIPTION

This position will be responsible for leading the tissue culture media preparation process to meet ArborGen’s goal of being the world leader in varietal production. The individual will have responsibilities to assist the Media Preparation Manager and the Director of Varietal Manufacturing to develop and implement a quality management system, including SOPs, to ensure consistency in media quality. This individual is required to have knowledge and work experience in two of the following disciplines; chemistry, biochemistry, plant biology, bioprocess management, bio-engineering, and quality control management.  He/she is responsible for meeting weekly media demands to ensure annual targets are met. This individual must be reliable, innovative, team-oriented and conscientious with a positive work attitude.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Enforces safety procedures and safety policies; maintains a safe laboratory environment.
  • Supervise team members on a day to day basis to ensure technical integrity, product quality and overall lab efficiency to achieve manufacturing targets of output and yield.
  • Assist his or her supervisor to manage the media preparation team to achieve yearly production targets and provide quality tissue culture media.
  • Coordinate and implement work orders/assignments. Ensures completion of the work orders on schedule.
  • Maintain chemical inventory to ensure no media production order is missed
  • Coordinate with engineering support as needed to ensure equipment is running properly via maintenance, repairs and modifications.
  • Maintain consistent media quality by developing and implementing quality control programs.
  • Coordinate with SE manufacturing department, SE R&D, Cell Line Development and Science Group on a weekly basis for issues related to media orders and media QA/QC.
  • Coordinate with the team members responsible for quality control aspects on a day-to-day basis to insure batch data is recorded/reviewed and QC points are measured and discussed if OOS (out of spec) is observed.
  • Writing deficiency reports related to media production to ensure they are filed on a timely basis and are complete.
  • Maintains a current knowledge of specific processes via routine execution of them leading to recommendations for improvement and their implementation.
  • Coordinate with the research and development labs for validation and pilot scale testing of new media formulations.
  • Coordinate with the engineering group for validation and integration of new equipment into the media production process.
  • Monitor productivity metrics on a day-to-day basis building to annual milestones achievements.
  • Participates in establishing the group goals and milestonesSupports in the development and training of group members.
ONGOING INTERACTION
  • Department: Daily interaction with direct reports.  Frequent interaction with peers including participation in planning and review meetings for the media production processes.  Frequent interaction with Supervisor.
  • Company:  Regular interaction with peers in other department. Participates in company’s planning, safety and review meetings.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE / SKILLS
  • Master’s degree with 1 or more years experience or Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline with a minimum of 3 years experience and a demonstrated working knowledge of scientific principles related to chemistry, plant nutrition and their affects in multiple tissue culture systems.
  • Experience with QA/QC development specific to media formulation
  • Firm basis in aseptic technique and ability to teach this to others.
  • Must be knowledgeable in various laboratory equipment and apparatus with the ability to troubleshoot with minimal assistance.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills to facilitate collaborative efforts.
  • Statistical analysis – Ability to use modern statistical software for advanced data analysis, process optimization, and design of experiments.
  • Proficiency in computer skills is required; specifically Microsoft Excel and Word.

PRODUCTION COORDINATOR – VARIETAL PRODUCTS (Pine, Sweetgum and Eucalyptus)

DESCRIPTION

Lead the operations of varietal production including planning, budgeting, execution of the plans and inventory management to achieve targets. This position leads key functions including hedge stock management, cutting propagation, finished mini-plug production and transplanting for finished containers. This position will support and coordinate with the Bellville nursery staff. Technical skills are required in vegetative propagation, greenhouse management, plug production, nursery production supervision and general cost controls.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Safety:  Provide leadership to the varietal team to achieve zero recordable and robust training to employees and crew leaders for contract labor.
  • Develop and maintain budgets, production schedules, general labor and material plans, and data systems for the operations.
  • Directly supervise varietal operations including hedge stock, propagation and finished plug production in greenhouses.
  • Maintain inventories of all live goods and other materials at all times to accurately reflect availability to the customer.
  • Provide technical growing requirements to nursery specialist and help coordination for the successful varietal container production

  • Department: Daily interaction with Supervisor (Production Coordinator and or Nursery Manager).  Frequent interaction with peers in the immediate work group.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE / SKILLS
  • Bachelor’s degree in science or a closely related discipline with 0-2 year’s experience in pine or hardwood seedling production or horticulture crop or Associate’s degree in science or a closely related discipline with 4-6 year’s experience in pine or hardwood seedling production or horticulture crop or High School Diploma with a minimum of 6-8 years of experience in pine or hardwood seedling production or horticulture crop. Knowledge of nursery irrigation systems and controls is helpful.
  • Mechanical ability, tractor and forklift operation experience preferred
  • Proficiency in computer skills is required
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This position requires both field and greenhouse work in sometimes stressful environmental conditions including heat, cold, wet, or dry.  Work could include exerting up to 40 pounds of force; work may involve climbing, stooping, crouching, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting and grasping; worker is subject to noise, vibration, working hazards, fumes, odors, dust, gasses and chemicals; visual acuity is required for greenhouse management and cutting collection; requires hearing sufficient to perceive noises for diagnostic purposes.  May require work in the field such as planting, measuring, harvesting pine seedlings, and assisting in shipment of seedlings.  Sharp implements may be used from time-to-time.

OTHER COMMENTS

Irrigation on weekends on a rotation basis required (Once every 4-5 weeks).  Some night-time, holiday, weekend, and extended daytime hours will be scheduled depending on the time of year and work load.

PROJECT LEADER< SEED ORCHARD AND NURSERY TECHNICAL SERVICES

DESCRIPTION

DEPARTMENT: Product Development
REPORTS TO: Director, Product Development
FLSA STATUS: Exempt

Work with operations and product development teams to provide technical services supporting seed and seedling production, with a goal of optimizing seedling quality and nursery productivity. Oversee the company seedling quality assessment program. Plan and coordinate all aspects of seed processing, bareroot and container seedling production research projects. Work with Sales to assess potential seedling quality and survival issues affecting customers. Position will require supervision of personnel and oversight and accountability for specific research tasks and budget.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develop and implement specific experiments related to bare root and container seedling production in conjunction with ArborGen nurseries and Product Development personnel
  • Develop and manage a research project budget of up to $300,000 and maintain company vehicle and other assets valued at up to $100,000
  • Analyze and interpret nursery and field test data
  • Carry out the seedling quality program coordinating the installation of plots, collection of data and summary and publication of results.
  • Provide technical support to orchard and nursery personnel related to chemical usage, plant nutrition, seedling mortality and SOP development.
  • Maintain a high level of professional expertise through knowledge of current literature and state of the art of relevant seed and seedling production technology, and utilize this knowledge in the design of experiments, research and/or development.
  • Effectively communicate research results and other findings to appropriate operating group personnel.
  • Participate in technical project reviews.
  • Represent ArborGen in university-industry research cooperatives.
  • May supervise and evaluate the performance of one or more field support personnel.
  • Adhere to safety policies and maintain a safe laboratory environment.
ONGOING INTERACTION
  • Department: Daily with those supervised. Frequent interaction with supervisor and with peers in the immediate work group.
  • Company: Regular interaction with Nursery Managers, Production Coordinators and Seed Orchard Managers across the company as related to common research targets and technical objectives. Interaction with Sales Team in addressing seedling quality and survival issues affecting customers
  • Outside Company: Expected to participate in outside conferences and symposia when appropriate, and to distribute trips reports and competitive intelligence information following the meeting. May give public presentations or author publications.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE / SKILLS
  • Master of Science degree or higher in a plant sciences field, with experience in forestry, nursery practices, plant physiology or plant pathology. Minimum of five years experience working in a plant sciences related field
  • Familiarity with fundamental concepts of experimental design and data analysis required.
  • Good communication skills with the ability to interface at all levels of management.
  • Computer proficiency is required.
