CURRENT POSITIONS

Orchard Specialist – Livingston Seed Orchard, Livingston, TX

DESCRIPTION

The primary responsibilities of the Orchard Specialist are to perform the day to day tasks and duties required for an efficient pine seed production operation.  The position is heavily weighted toward operating heavy equipment and performing manual tasks, both skilled and unskilled, involved in producing open-pollinated (OP) and mass control pollinated (MCP) seed, including but not limited to seed orchard ground maintenance and tree care, cone harvesting, seed processing/storage, research and MCP breeding and pollen collection activities, and research test maintenance and measurement activities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Operate and maintain farm tractors, mowers, sprayers, forklifts, ATVs, chain saws and other equipment used in orchard operations.
  • Operate and work from aerial lift trucks during cone harvest, breeding, pollen collection and tree limb pruning operations for extended periods.
  • Maintain records including but not limited to equipment maintenance, parts inventory, safety inspections, fuel records, and field activities.
  • Ability to identify tree damage symptoms / pest species and perform all phases of pest control, including herbicide and insecticide applications.
  • Conduct scion collection, grafting, bagging, control pollination and pollen collection.
  • Install, maintain and measure field research projects.
  • Wear personal protective equipment and maintain a safe working environment.
  • Obtain and maintain a Commercial Drivers License and a Restricted Use Pesticide Applicators License if required.
ONGOING INTERACTION
  • Department: Daily interaction with direct reports if applicable. Frequent interaction with peers in the immediate work group.  Regular interaction with peers in other groups within the department.  Frequent interaction with Supervisor.
  • Company: Regular interaction with peers in other research groups across the company as related to common research targets. Occasional participation in review sessions with CTO and Science Team.
  • Outside Company: Participation in industry meetings.
CERTIFICATIONS

The person must have a valid driver’s license.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE / SKILLS
  • High school diploma or equivalent, with additional education and technical training preferred.
  • Experience in nursery or farming operations desirable, with emphasis on equipment operation
  • Experience in carpentry, welding, equipment maintenance, plumbing and electrical repair.
  • Basic math, oral and written communications, and interpersonal skills.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This is heavy work exerting 40-100 pounds of force repeatedly.  Work may involve climbing, stooping, crouching, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting and grasping.  Worker is subject to inside and outside environment, noise, vibration, working hazards, fumes, odors, dust, wood smoke and chemicals.   Must pass a respirator test and wear a respirator while spraying pesticides and treating pine seed.  Visual acuity is required for equipment and vehicle operation; requires hearing sufficient to perceive noises for diagnostic purposes.

OTHER COMMENTS
  • This is a non-exempt position. Seasonal overtime and weekend work required.  Little to no overnight travel.  90% of work is out of doors in all seasons and weather conditions, 10% record-keeping.

Assistant Orchard Manager – Ridgeville, SC / Claxton, GA

DESCRIPTION

Assist in leading a high performing team of employees to plan and execute the production and supply of seed to company nurseries. Plan and assist in management of the orchards, seed processing and final seed treatment.  Functions including short and long term forecasting of supply, budgeting, team management, orchard operations, seed processing, MCP production and logistics.  Insuring a safe work place in coordination with ArborGen’s Stop Think Safety First program.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead the planning and forecasting of seed supply with emphasis on advanced genetics to achieve annual and long term plans. Integrate new ideas and tools supporting this effort.
  • Collaborate with product development and the orchard ops team to lead the:
    1.  planning, design and establishment of new orchard blocks
    2. improvement of the MCP SOP’s to increase yields
  • Lead the review of all seed production and processing SOP’s and coordinate with the project leader position in product development to improve our quality, cost and reliability of supply.
  • Assist in directing the operations of the orchards to ensure supply of seed meets all targets for quality, volume and cost.
  • Provide a mentoring and training program for orchard and seed processing operations to maintain ArborGen as a leader in orchard and seed production.
  • Ensure a safe work place by providing leadership in safety and environmental efforts and monitoring and training individual employees to commit to safety and to the safety of their team.
  • Help design and execute operational research projects for tree improvement and orchard operations.
ONGOING INTERACTION

The incumbent will be expected to interact daily with indirect reports and with peers in the immediate work group. Regular interaction with peers in other groups across the company as related to common targets. Frequent interaction with ArborGen management, product development and the orchards ops team. Participation in outside conferences and symposia.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE / SKILLS

MS or PhD degree in Forestry, Agronomy, related science or equivalent experience, with an understanding of and experience in forestry, tree improvement or crop genetics and orchard management.

Candidate must have a strong analytical ability to support; inventory planning/scheduling, budgeting, and yield forecasting. It is advantageous to have experience in personnel management and safety.

Qualified applicants must have 3+ years of relevant professional experience and experience supervising 4 or more individuals.
