Seed Orchard Analyst – Ridgeville, SC

Organize and manage seed orchard and seed inventory databases.  Maintain updated seed inventory and provide seed allocation plans for annual nursery production based on guidelines from Product Development and Sales.  Maintain up-to-date inventories of all production orchards and clone banks for the company and update long-term seed production models as needed. Maintain cone inventories for orchards and update as required.  Provide reports to Orchards and Management as required.  This position requires some limited travel to orchards and company meetings.

  • Annually carryout allocation of seed from inventory to meet targeted sales plan for the coming year. Allocation includes identifying appropriate genetic entities and quantities of seed to meet production goals for each nursery.
  • Maintain seed inventory including deposits of new seed after each cone harvest and withdrawals of seed for stratification each spring. Identify appropriate seedlots to withdraw and mix to meet seed demands for each nursery.  Provide seed inventory reports to management and accounting as needed 
  • Maintain and update orchards data base to include new orchards and tree removals annually and update long term yield models with new orchard inventory.
  • Report on seed test results including seed purity, seed per pound and seed germination. Adjust germination percentages based on nursery allocations.
  • Report on cone harvest results each year as they become available.
  • Maintain historical data base for cone harvest and seed yield results across all products.
  • Calculate simple statistics for most orchard, cone and seed variables.
  • Provide production summaries for breeding, cone harvest and seed activities annually to Orchard Manager and Orchard Supervisors
  • Adhere to safety policies.

Department: Daily with Orchard Manager and Orchard Supervisors

Company:  Regular interaction with Product Development and Nursery personnel related to genetic categories and seed needs for production plans. 

Outside Company: Occasional interactions with relevant professionals regarding database and seed orchard operations. 

  • Master of Science degree in a relevant plant science. Background in forest or horticultural orchard sciences preferred.
  • Working knowledge of basic statistics.
  • Computer proficiency is required: MS Word, Excel, Access, SQL (or similar) skills are essential; SAS, R, ASReml, additional programming skills a plus.
  • Good communication skills with the ability to interface at all levels of management.

This is mostly sedentary office work.  May infrequently involve some work in company orchards including aerial lifts to heights of 85 feet for pollination or inventory tasks.

Nursery and Orchard Specialist – Bluff City Nursery, Bluff City, AR

ArborGen’s Bluff City, AR Nursery located in Bluff City, AR. has a position open for a Nursery and Orchard Specialist.  This facility produces 40 million+ bare root pine and hardwood seedlings from seed annually.  This position will serve both a nursery and orchard function. 

  • The Nursery Specialist is required to perform all the skilled operations at an ArborGen’s Nursery.  He/she is responsible for production goals, product quality, and minimizing nursery expenses. 
  • The primary responsibilities of the Orchard Specialist are to support the Orchard Manager and/or assume responsibility for day-to-day operations in all aspects of seed orchard management, seed production, seed processing, and seed storage and sowing preparation.      

The Nursery / Orchard Specialist must be reliable, innovative, team-oriented, and conscientious with a positive work ethic.  Limited travel, some weekend work, and seasonal overtime will be required.

  1. Operate, maintain, modify and calibrate farm tractors, chain saws, agricultural equipment, conveyors, and strappers and other equipment used on the job.
  2. Ability to operate a 5-function forklift for extended periods
  3. Ability to operate and work out of bucket trucks and/or self-propelled aerial lifts
  4. Ability to obtain and maintain a Commercial Drivers License (if the need arises) and a Restricted Use Pesticide Applicators License;
  5. The physical strength and stamina to perform physically demanding tasks for extended periods such as chain / pole saw operation for tree felling and limb pruning, cone harvesting, and repeated lifting and movement of 50-pound boxes and/or bags of pine seed or pine cones.
  6. Maintain records including but not limited to equipment maintenance, parts inventory, safety inspections, and fuel records.
  7. Assist in the operation and maintenance of an automatic irrigation system including pump station, below ground main lines, above-ground supply system, and digital controllers.
  8. Weld and fabricate metal items.
  9. Assist in all phases of weed control, including herbicide application, mechanical control, and hand weeding.
  10. Assist in all phases of crop nutrition including fertilization recommendations and applications.
  11. Operate and work from aerial lift trucks during cone harvest, breeding, pollen collection, and tree limb pruning operations for extended periods.
  12. Ability to identify tree damage symptoms/pest species and perform all phases of pest control, including herbicide and insecticide applications.
  13. Conduct scion collection, grafting, bagging, control pollination, and pollen collection.
  14. Wear safety personal protective equipment, maintain facility, and maintain a safe working environment.
  15. Supervise labor in various nursery/orchard operations.
  16. Serve as a team member in group work improvement projects.
  17. Work extended hours, weekends, and holidays, outdoors in all types of weather conditions as required.
  18. Participate in and complete required safety training and the ability to oversee and manage contract labor safety program.
  19. Other duties and projects as assigned.

Department: Daily interaction with direct reports if applicable. Frequent interaction with peers in the immediate work group. Regular interaction with peers in the other groups within the department. Frequent interaction with Supervisor.

 ArborGen’s Nursery in Shellman, GA has an open position for a Nursery Specialist. The Nursery Specialist is required to perform all the skilled operations at a Nursery. Nursery Specialist – Bullard Nursery, Bullard, TX

ArborGen’s Nursery in Bullard, TX has a position open for a Nursery Specialist.  This facility produces 50 million+ bareroot pine seedlings from seed annually.  The Nursery Specialist is required to perform all of the skilled operations at a nursery.  He/she is responsible for production goals, product quality and minimizing nursery expenses.  A specialist must be reliable, innovative, team-oriented and conscientious with a positive work attitude. 

  • Operate, maintain, modify and calibrate farm tractors, agricultural equipment, irrigation system components, and other equipment used on the job.

  • Maintain records including but not limited to equipment maintenance, parts inventory, safety inspections, and fuel records.

  • Assist in the operation and maintenance of an automatic irrigation system including pump station, below ground main lines, above ground supply system, and digital controllers.

  • Assist in all phases of weed control, including herbicide application, mechanical control and hand weeding.

     

  • Assist in all phases of crop nutrition including fertilizer applications and crop tissue and soil sampling.

     

  • Wear safety personal protective equipment, maintain facility, and maintain a safe working environment.  Participate in and complete required safety training.

     

  • Supervise labor in various nursery operations.  Will be working with a contract labor crew on a daily basis during certain times of the year.

     

  • Serve as a team member and/or leader in group work improvement projects.

     

  • Work extended hours, weekends and holidays, outdoors in all types of weather conditions as required.  Examples would be weekend irrigation duty or repair, planting season, and lifting season to meet production goals.

  • Mechanical ability with tractor and forklift experience.

     

  • Private Pesticide applicator license preferred, but not required.
