Forestry Agricultural Specialist – Bullard, Texas

ArborGen’s Nursery in Bluff City, AR has a position open for a Forestry Agricultural Specialist.  This facility produces millions of bareroot pine and hardwood seedlings annually.  The Forestry Agricultural Specialist is required to perform all of the skilled operations at a nursery.  He/she is responsible for production goals, product quality and minimizing nursery expenses.  A specialist must be reliable, innovative, team-oriented and conscientious with a positive work attitude.

 

  • Operate, maintain, modify and calibrate farm tractors, agricultural equipment, irrigation system components, and other equipment used on the job.
  • Weld and fabricate metal items.
  • Maintain records including but not limited to equipment maintenance, parts inventory, safety inspections, and fuel records.
  • Assist in the operation and maintenance of an automatic irrigation system including pump station, below ground main lines, above ground supply system, and digital controllers.
  • Assist in all phases of weed control, including herbicide application, mechanical control and hand weeding.
  • Assist in all phases of crop nutrition including fertilizer applications and crop tissue and soil sampling.
  • Wear safety personal protective equipment, maintain facility, and maintain a safe working environment.  Participate in and complete required safety training.
  • Supervise labor in various nursery operations.  Will be working with a contract labor crew on a daily basis during certain times of the year.
  • Serve as a team member and/or leader in group work improvement projects.
  • Work extended hours, weekends and holidays, outdoors in all types of weather conditions as required.  Examples would be weekend irrigation duty or repair, planting season, and lifting season to meet production goals.
  • Ability to work closely with colleagues to meet peak needs and production goals.
  • Adapt quickly to changing conditions including job functions.
  • Ability to be innovative and resourceful to accomplish goals.
  • Other duties and projects as assigned.
  • Department: Daily interaction with Supervisor (Production Coordinator and or Nursery Manager). Frequent interaction with peers in the immediate work group.
  • Company: Interaction with peers in other nursery and orchard groups across the company as related to seedling production targets.
  • Outside Company: May participate in outside conferences and symposia when appropriate.

 

 

  • Experience in industrial mechanics, agricultural mechanics, general construction, welding, metal fabrication, hydraulics, electrical systems, HVAC and equipment repair / maintenance.
  • (Preferred) Associate Degree in Industrial Maintenance, Agriculture / Horticulture Engineering, Welding, Electrical, General Mechanical or 5+ years’ experience operating and maintaining industrial and/or agricultural equipment in lieu of education.
  • Tractor and forklift operation experience preferred but not required.
  • Private Pesticide applicator license preferred, but not required.

 

 

    • This is a non-exempt position. Seasonal overtime and weekend work required.  Little to no overnight travel.  90% of work is out of doors in all seasons and weather conditions, 10% record-keeping.

    ArborGen’s Nursery in Blenheim, SC has an open position for a Forestry Agricultural Specialist. This facility produces millions of bare root pine seedlings from seed annually. The Forestry Agricultural Specialist is required to perform all the skilled operations at a Tree Nursery. He/she is responsible for production goals, product quality and minimizing nursery expenses. A specialist must be reliable, innovative, team-oriented and conscientious with a positive work ethic.

     

    1. Operate, maintain, modify and calibrate farm tractors, agricultural equipment, conveyors, and strapping machines and other equipment used on the job.

    2. Maintain records including but not limited to equipment maintenance, parts inventory, safety inspections, and fuel records.

    3. Assist in the operation and maintenance of an automatic irrigation system including pump station, below ground main lines, above ground supply system, and digital controllers.

    4. Assist in all phases of weed control, including herbicide application, mechanical control and hand weeding.

      Forestry Orchard/Agricultural Specialist – Selma, Alabama

      ArborGen’s Selma Nursery located near Selma, Alabama has a position open for a Forestry Orchard/Agricultural Specialist. This facility produces millions of bare root hardwood seedlings from seed annually and manages 100 acres of pine seed orchards. This position will serve both a nursery and orchard function.

      The primary responsibilities of the Specialist are to support the Orchard Manager and/or assume responsibility for day to day operations in all aspects of seed orchard management, seed production, seed processing, and seed storage and sowing preparation.

       

       

       

      • Operate, maintain, modify and calibrate farm tractors, chain saws, agricultural equipment, conveyors, and strappers and other equipment used on the job.
      • Ability to operate a 5-function forklift for extended periods
      • Ability to operate and work out of bucket trucks and/or self-propelled aerial lifts
      • Ability to obtain and maintain a Commercial Drivers License (if the need arises) and a Restricted Use Pesticide Applicators License;
      • The physical strength and stamina to perform physically demanding tasks for extended periods such as chain / pole saw operation for tree felling and limb pruning, cone harvesting, and repeated lifting and movement of 50 pound boxes and/or bags of pine seed or pine cones.
      • Maintain records including but not limited to equipment maintenance, parts inventory, safety inspections, and fuel records.
      • Assist in the operation and maintenance of an automatic irrigation system including pump station, below ground main lines, above ground supply system, and digital controllers.

        ArborGen’s Bellville Orchard near Claxton, GA has a position open for a Forestry Orchard /Agricultural Specialist. The primary responsibilities of the Specialist are to support the Orchard Manager and/or assume responsibility for day to day operations in all aspects of seed orchard management, seed production, seed processing, and seed storage and sowing preparation.

         

         

         

        • Operate and maintain farm tractors, mowers, sprayers, forklifts, chain saws and other equipment used in orchard operations.
        • Operate and work from aerial lift trucks (up to 85’) during MCP season, cone harvest, and tree limb pruning operations for extended periods.
        • Maintain records including but not limited to equipment maintenance, parts inventory, safety inspections, fuel records, and field activities.
        • Ability to identify tree damage symptoms / pest species and perform all phases of pest control, including herbicide and insecticide applications.
        • Conduct scion collection and grafting of orchards and clone banks.
        • Wear personal protective equipment and maintain a safe working environment.
        • Obtain and maintain a Restricted Use Pesticide Applicators License if required.

         

        Department: Daily interaction with supervisor and peers in the seed orchard group.  Frequent interaction with peers in other groups within the department. 

        Company: Infrequent interaction with peers in other groups across the company as related to common orchard targets. 

        Outside Company: Rare participation in industry meetings.

         

         

        High school diploma or equivalent, with additional Forestry/Agriculture education and technical training preferred.

        Experience in nursery or farming operations desirable, with emphasis on equipment operation.

        Experience in carpentry, welding, equipment maintenance, plumbing and electrical repair a plus.

        Basic math, oral and written communications, and interpersonal skills.

        Valid driver’s license
