Project Leader, Pine Tree Improvement and Seedling Quality

Manage Product Development research breeding orchards and breeding program.  Work with operations and product development teams to provide technical services supporting seed and seedling production.  Oversee the company seedling quality assessment program.  Plan and coordinate all aspects of seed production, seed processing, bareroot and container seedling production research projects.  Position will require supervision of personnel and oversight and accountability for specific research tasks and budget.   CLICK HERE TO APPLY ONLINE

  • Manage research breeding orchards and coordinate and carry out necessary grafting and breeding tasks in conjunction with Product Development and Orchards personnel
  • Carry out the seedling quality program coordinating the installation of plots, collection of data and summary and publication of results.
  • Manage and implement pine clone bank and archiving plan.
  • Provide technical support to orchard personnel related to orchard establishment, maintenance and production.
  • Develop and implement specific experiments related to bare root and container seedling production in conjunction with ArborGen nurseries and Product Development personnel
  • Develop and manage a research project budget of up to $300,000 and maintain company vehicle and other assets valued at up to $100,000
  • Maintain a high level of professional expertise through knowledge of current literature and state of the art seed and seedling production technology. Utilize this knowledge in the design of experiments, research and/or development.
  • Effectively communicate research results and other findings to appropriate operating group personnel.
  • Participate in technical project reviews.
  • Represent ArborGen in university-industry research cooperatives.
  • May supervise and evaluate the performance of one or more field support personnel.
  • Adhere to safety policies.

Department: Daily with those supervised. Frequent interaction with supervisor and  with peers in the immediate work group.

Company: Regular interaction with Nursery Managers, Production Coordinators and Seed Orchard Managers across the company as related to common research targets and technical objectives. 

Outside Company: Expected to  participate in outside conferences and symposia when appropriate, and to distribute trip reports and competitive intelligence information following the meeting.  May give public presentations or author publications.  Provide seedling quality reports to customers.

  • Master of Science degree or higher in a plant sciences field, with experience in forestry, nursery practices, plant breeding, plant physiology or plant pathology. Minimum of five years experience working in a plant sciences related field
  • Familiarity with fundamental concepts of experimental design and data analysis required.
  • Experience with plant breeding and grafting.
  • Good communication skills with the ability to interface at all levels of management.
  • Computer proficiency is required.

Depending on the research scope, this position could be be sedentary to medium work exerting up to 40 pounds of force; work may involve repetitive motion activities involved in keyboarding and sample preparation, laboratory bench work, climbing, stooping, crouching, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting and grasping; worker is subject to inside and outside environment, including possible chemical hazards, noise, vibration, working hazards, fumes, odors, dust, gasses and chemicals; visual acuity is required for experiments; requires hearing sufficient to perceive noises for diagnostic purposes.  May require work in the field such as planting, assessing, measuring, and harvesting small or large tree stocks.

Project Leader, Genetic Evaluation

Organize and manage genetic performance data for Product Development, Operations and Sales. Provide ArborGen Sales personnel and large customers with information required to select appropriate genetics for production objectives and reforestation locations.  Work with Sales, Operations and Customers on genetic decisions related to the annual seedling production plan.  Provide easy to understand product performance summaries from internal and public data bases for use by ArborGen Sales teams and customers.  CLICK HERE TO APPLY ONLINE

  • Develop, maintain and support a database of internal and external genetic performance information to support the nurseries & orchards business.
  • Develop and manage annual seedling allocation databases to support customers, sales, and nursery production.
  • Effectively communicate genetic ratings, research results and other findings to Sales Team and customers
  • Support marketing and value selling of ArborGen existing and new products through presentations to customers, at meetings and through publications in trade journals and professional journals
  • Maintain a high level of professional expertise through knowledge of current literature and state of the art breeding, genetics and statistical analysitical methodologies. Utilize this knowledge in the design of experiments, research and/or development.
  • Participate in technical project reviews.
  • Represent ArborGen in university-industry research cooperatives.

Outside Company: Regular and frequent interactions with national account customers related to the selection of the appropriate genetics for their deployment needs.

  • Master of Science degree or higher in plant breeding and quantitative genetics
  • Familiarity with southeastern US timber markets, tree breeding, tree improvement programs and forest management highly desired.
  • Good communication skills with the ability to interface at all levels of management.
  • Computer proficiency is required: MS Word, Excel, Access, SQL (or similar) skills are essential; SAS, R, ASReml, additional programming skills a plus.

Greenhouse Production Coordinator – Ridgeville, SC

ArborGen’s Product Development in Ridgeville, SC has an open position for a Greenhouse Production Coordinator.  The Greenhouse Production Coordinator will have responsibilities to oversee research trials, seedling crop production, and greenhouse facility maintenance.  SCROLL DOWN TO APPLY ONLINE

  • Research – Schedule and initiate research trials, and coordinate data collection.
  • Seedling crop management – maintain a precise schedule for soil preparation, sowing of seeds, collecting and sticking of cuttings, transplanting of SE and rooted cutting plants, irrigation, fertilization, pesticide spraying, cultural practices and lifting of seedlings.
  • Maintain greenhouse crop and pesticide records working with greenhouse team members.
  • Monitor seedling crops for inventory, quality, growth, and pests.
  • Facility maintenance – Evaluate greenhouse facility, equipment and irrigation for repair and maintenance needs. Schedule and manage in-house and contract maintenance and repairs.
  • Administrative — Directly supervise contract labor, manage a strong safety program, oversee supply purchasing and inventory.
  • Department: Daily interaction with contract employees. Frequent interaction with peers in the immediate work group. Regular interaction with peers in other groups within the department. Daily interaction with Supervisor.
  • Company: Regular interaction with peers in other groups across the company as related to common production targets.
  • Outside Company: Participation in outside conferences and industry meetings.
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture or related agricultural/forestry field and 5 years work experience in a horticulture/agricultural/forestry -related field. Greenhouse experience preferred.

  • Strong administrative and organizational skills supported by proficiency with spreadsheet and word processing software.

  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills.

  • Strong sense of financial and asset stewardship.

  • Must obtain South Carolina Private Pesticide Applicator’s license within 6 months of hire.

  • Valid driver’s license.

This is heavy work exerting 40-100 pounds of force repeatedly. Work may involve climbing, stooping, crouching, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting and grasping. Worker is subject to inside and outside environment, noise, vibration, working hazards, fumes, odors, dust, wood smoke and chemicals. Some outdoor work in summer sun and heat with high humidity, and in winter cold, possibly with rain, will be required. Visual acuity is required for equipment and vehicle operation; requires hearing sufficient to perceive noises for diagnostic purposes.

Key personal traits include good interpersonal and communication skills along with a strong work ethic and ability to manage a variety of tasks simultaneously. Weekend duty will be required on a rotating team basis, and extended work hours may be required to complete some tasks and on a seasonal basis. This is an exempt position, with limited travel required.
