Nursery Specialist – ArborGen Bellville Nursery: Bellville, GA

Nursery Specialist – MCP and Varietal Production.

Position requires performance of all the skilled operations necessary to successfully to supervise and assist in maintaining hedge-stock, collect and stick rooted cuttings, transplant and grow rooted cuttings and transplanted SE plugs to target seedling size specifications.  They will be responsible for the production goals, product quality, and minimizing expense.  This individual must be reliable, innovative, team-oriented and conscientious with a positive work attitude

  • Operate, maintain, modify, and calibrate grow-out equipment, including irrigation systems, to provide optimum growing environment
  • Maintain Greenhouses, poly-houses and grow-out pad in a weed and pest free condition
  • Apply pesticides to rooted cuttings and SE transplants as needed to promote seedling growth and quality
  • Assist with the collection & sticking of rooted cuttings
  • Transplant RC and SE mini-plugs into grow out containers
  • Coordinate transfer of rooted cuttings and SE transplants to grow-out pad
  • Maintain cooler at optimum operating efficiency for storage of SE transplants
  • Supervise labor crews as needed to transplant SE plugs and move rooted cuttings to the grow-out pad
  • Develop and maintain records for grow-out operations
  • Participates and provides input into work planning schedules
  • Order parts and supplies
  • Shows independent action and a high degree of initiative in resolving problems and developing recommendations
  • Presents periodic reports of grow-out pad operations to supervisor, makes routine recommendations
  • Resolves problems where judgment and initiative are required and makes recommendations
  • Adheres to safety policies and maintains a safe working environment.
  • Supports continuous improvement efforts by identifying and communicating trends uncovered through the rooting cutting process
  • Adapts quickly to changing conditions including job functions
  • Works closely with colleagues to meet peak needs of other site operations
  • Will be working with a contract labor crew on a daily basis

Department: Daily interaction with Supervisor (Production Coordinator and or Nursery Manager). Frequent interaction with peers in the immediate work group.

Company: Interaction with peers in other nursery and orchard groups across the company as related to seedling production targets.

Outside Company: May participate in outside conferences and symposia when appropriate.

  • Private Pesticide license not required but preferred.
  • Associate degree in science or a closely related discipline or High School Diploma with experience in agriculture, greenhouse, or horticulture. Knowledge of irrigation systems and controls is helpful.
  • Mechanical ability, tractor and forklift operation experience preferred.
  • Any working knowledge of computer is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Tractor (GPS), forklift

This position requires both field and greenhouse work in sometimes stressful environmental conditions including heat, cold, wet, or dry.  Work could include exerting up to 40 pounds of force; work may involve climbing, stooping, crouching, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting and grasping; worker is subject to noise, vibration, working hazards, fumes, odors, dust, gasses and chemicals; visual acuity is required for greenhouse management and cutting collection; requires hearing sufficient to perceive noises for diagnostic purposes.  May require work in the field such as planting, measuring, harvesting pine seedlings, and assisting in shipment of seedlings.  Sharp implements may be used from time-to-time. 

Irrigation on weekends on a rotation basis required (Once every 4-5 weeks).  Some night-time, holiday, weekend, and extended daytime hours will be scheduled depending on the time of year and work load.

Project Leader, Genetic Evaluation

Organize and manage genetic performance data for Product Development, Operations and Sales. Provide ArborGen Sales personnel and large customers with information required to select appropriate genetics for production objectives and reforestation locations.  Work with Sales, Operations and Customers on genetic decisions related to the annual seedling production plan.  Provide easy to understand product performance summaries from internal and public data bases for use by ArborGen Sales teams and customers.  Be familiar with genetic options offered by ArborGen through the coordination of genetic field trials and demonstrations.

  • Develop, maintain and support a database of internal and external genetic performance information to support the nurseries & orchards business.
  • Develop and manage annual seedling allocation databases to support customers, sales, and nursery production.
  • Coordinate the installation of pine genetic trials and demonstrations in the southeastern United States.
  • Participate in genetic data analysis of internal progeny trials, field evaluation of genetic performance and selection of commercial genetics.
  • Develop and manage a research project budget of up to $300,000 and maintain company vehicle and other assets valued at up to $100,000
  • Support marketing and value selling of ArborGen existing and new products through presentations to customers and at meetings and through publications in trade journals and professional journals
  • Maintain a high level of professional expertise through knowledge of current literature and state of the art of relevant to breeding genetics and statistical analysitical methodologies and utilize this knowledge in the design of experiments, research and/or development.
  • Effectively communicate genetic ratings, research results and other findings to customers
  • Participate in technical project reviews.
  • Represent ArborGen in university-industry research cooperatives.
  • May supervise and evaluate the performance of one or more support personnel.
  • Adhere to safety policies.

Department: Daily with those supervised. Frequent interaction with supervisor and  with peers in the immediate work group.

Company: Regular interaction with Sales and Nurseries personnel related to selection of genetics for production and customer recommendations. 

Outside Company: Regular and frequent interactions with national account customers related to the selection of the appropriate genetics for their deployment needs.

  • Master of Science degree or higher in plant breeding and quantitative genetics
  • Familiarity with southeastern US timber markets, tree breeding, tree improvement programs and forest management highly desired.
  • Good communication skills with the ability to interface at all levels of management.
  • Database experience and proficiency in MS Access and SQL.
  • Computer proficiency is required: MS Word, Excel skills are essential; SAS, R, ASReml, additional programming skills a plus.

Nursery Specialist – Shellman, Georgia

ArborGen’s Nursery in Shellman, GA has an open position for a Nursery Specialist. The Nursery Specialist is required to perform all the skilled operations at a Nursery. He/she is responsible for production goals, product quality and minimizing nursery expenses. A specialist must be reliable, innovative, team-oriented and conscientious with a positive work ethic.

  • Operate, maintain, modify and calibrate farm tractors, agricultural equipment, conveyors, and strapping machines and other equipment used on the job.

  • Maintain records including but not limited to equipment maintenance, parts inventory, safety inspections, and fuel records.

  • Assist in the operation and maintenance of an automatic irrigation system including pump station, below ground main lines, above ground supply system, and digital controllers.

  • Weld and fabricate metal items.

  • Assist in all phases of weed control, including herbicide application, mechanical control and hand weeding.

  • Assist in all phases of crop nutrition including fertilization recommendations and applications.

  • Wear safety personal protective equipment, maintain facility, and maintain a safe working environment.

  • Supervise labor in various nursery operations.

  • Serve as a team member in group work improvement projects.

  • Work extended hours, weekends and holidays, outdoors in all types of weather conditions as required.

  • Participate in and complete required safety training.

  • Other duties and projects as assigned.

  • Experience in construction, welding, metal fabrication, and equipment maintenance.
  • Ability to be innovative and be resourceful to accomplish goals
  • Basic math, oral and written communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Associate Degree in Agriculture or Horticulture, or 5+ years experience operating and maintaining agricultural equipment in lieu of education preferred.
  • Good human relations skills to serve as a team member and a team leader.

This can be inside or outside work or working in hot, humid cold and damp conditions. Applicant must have a valid driver’s license. Applicant must pass a drug screening test.
