Nursery and Orchard Specialist
Selma, Alabama

ArborGen’s Selma Nursery located near Selma, Alabama has a position open for a Nursery and Orchard Specialist. This facility produces 4.5 million+ bare-root hardwood seedlings from seed annually and manages 100 acres of pine seed orchards. This position will serve both a nursery and orchard function.

  • The Nursery Specialist is required to perform all the skilled operations at an ArborGen’s Nursery. He/she is responsible for production goals, product quality, and minimizing nursery expenses.
  • The primary responsibilities of the Orchard Specialist are to support the Orchard Manager and/or assume responsibility for day-to-day operations in all aspects of seed orchard management, seed production, seed processing, and seed storage and sowing preparation.

The Nursery and Orchard Specialist must be reliable, innovative, team-oriented, and conscientious with a positive work ethic. Limited travel, some weekend work, and seasonal overtime will be required.

  1. Operate, maintain, modify and calibrate farm tractors, chain saws, agricultural equipment, conveyors, trappers, and other equipment used on the job.
  2. Ability to operate a 5-function forklift for extended periods.
  3. Ability to operate and work out of bucket trucks and/or self-propelled aerial lifts.
  4. Ability to obtain and maintain a Commercial Drivers License (if the need arises) and a Restricted Use Pesticide Applicators License.
  5. The physical strength and stamina to perform physically demanding tasks for extended periods such as chain/pole saw operation for tree felling and limb pruning, cone harvesting, and repeated lifting and movement of 50-pound boxes and/or bags of pine seed or pine cones.
  6. Maintain records including but not limited to equipment maintenance, parts inventory, safety inspections, and fuel records.
  7. Assist in the operation and maintenance of an automatic irrigation system including a pump station, below ground main lines, above-ground supply system, and digital controllers.
  8. Weld and fabricate metal items.
  9. Assist in all phases of weed control, including herbicide application, mechanical control, and hand weeding.
  10. Assist in all phases of crop nutrition including fertilization recommendations and applications.
  11. Operate and work from aerial lift trucks during cone harvest, breeding, pollen collection, and tree limb pruning operations for extended periods.
  12. Ability to identify tree damage symptoms/pest species and perform all phases of pest control, including herbicide and insecticide applications.
  13. Conduct scion collection, grafting, bagging, control pollination, and pollen collection.
  14. Wear safety personal protective equipment, maintain facility, and maintain a safe working environment.
  15. Supervise labor in various nursery/orchard operations.
  16. Serve as a team member in group work improvement projects.
  17. Work extended hours, weekends, and holidays, outdoors in all types of weather conditions as required.
  18. Participate in and complete required safety training and the ability to oversee and manage contract labor safety program.
  19. Other duties and projects as assigned.
Department: Daily interaction with direct reports if applicable. Frequent interaction with peers in the immediate work group. Regular interaction with peers in the other groups within the department. Frequent interaction with Supervisor.

Company: Regular interaction with peers in other research groups across the company as related to common research targets. Occasional participation in review sessions with CTO and Science Team.

This is heavy work exerting up to 40-100 pounds of force; work may involve climbing, stooping, crouching, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping; worker is subject to inside and outside environment, noise, vibration, working hazards, fumes, odors, dust, gasses and chemicals; visual acuity is required for experiments; requires hearing sufficient to perceive noises for diagnostic purposes.   This can be inside or outside work or working in hot, humid cold and damp conditions.  Will need to be able to wear a respirator for pesticide spraying.  Must be able to pass respirator fit test and pulmonary function exam.  Applicant must pass a drug screening test.

Accounting Specialist-Corporate Office
Ridgeville, SC

 The primary responsibilities of the Accounting Specialist are to (1) oversee the accounts receivable process performed at our locations which include assisting with the collection efforts and reporting findings to management, (2) maintain receivables for national accounts, and (3) assist with various other duties within the accounting department.  This position reports to the Assistant Controller.

  • Coordinate collection activity on regional customer accounts from sales and administration personnel and report to management.
  • Directly interface with national customers on payment matters and dispute resolutions.
  • Ensure necessary documentation is collected and maintained for customer orders.
  • Process and file sales tax returns.
  • Process new vendor credit applications.
  • Management of various insurance claims.
  • Assist in providing annual audit support.
  • Assist HR with monthly and annual reporting.
  • Assist accounting with other duties such as posting of deposits and management of expense reporting system.
  • 3-5 years work experience in accounts receivable and general bookkeeping.
  • Intermediate to advanced skills with Excel essential.

  • SAP B1 experience preferred.

 ArborGen’s Nursery in Blenheim, SC has an open position for a Full-Time Seasonal Nursery Specialist. This facility produces 60+ million bare-root pine seedlings from seed annually. The Nursery Specialist is required to perform all the skilled operations at a Nursery. He/she is responsible for production goals, product quality, and minimizing nursery expenses. A specialist must be reliable, innovative, team-oriented, and conscientious with a positive work ethic.

Project Leader, Genetic Evaluation – Ridgeville, SC

The Project Leader, Genetic Evaluation is responsible for all aspects of testing and evaluating ArborGen pine products in the US.  They will manage genetic performance data for Product Development, Operations and Sales, and provide ArborGen sales personnel and customers with information required to select appropriate genetics for production objectives and reforestation locations.  This position works with Sales, Operations, and Customers on genetic decisions related to the annual seedling production plan, and provides easy to understand product performance summaries from internal and public databases for use by ArborGen Sales teams and customers.   

  • Develop, maintain and support a database of internal and external genetic performance information to support the nurseries & orchards business.
  • Develop and manage annual seedling allocation databases to support customers, sales, and nursery production.
  • Coordinate and manage field trial and progeny testing activities for pine product development across the southeastern United States.
  • Effectively communicate genetic ratings, research results, and other findings to customers through written and oral communication including journal articles, conferences, workshops, and company meetings.
  • Maintain company vehicle and other assets valued at up to $100,000
  • Maintain a high level of professional expertise through knowledge of current literature and state-of-the-art genetics and statistical methods for use in the design of experiments, research, and/or development.

  • Computer proficiency is required: MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint.
  • Familiarity with southeastern US timber markets, tree breeding, tree improvement programs, and forest management is highly desired.

None. CDL and pesticide applicators licenses are beneficial.

This is medium to active work involving exertions of up to 50 pounds of force; work may involve climbing, stooping, crouching, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping; worker is subject to inside and outside environment, noise, vibration, working hazards, fumes, odors, dust, gasses, and chemicals; visual acuity is required for experiments; requires hearing sufficient to perceive noises for diagnostic purposes. Will require year-round work in the field such as planting, measuring, and harvesting small to large trees.  This job will require occasional work operating an aerial lift at heights up to 100 feet.

Travel may account for up to 50% of time and may be more frequent during various parts of the year depending on job tasks. The position requires frequent travel to seedling nurseries and remote field locations, and will be required to travel for consecutive weeks from July to December for nursery and field data collection.
