Nursery Specialist – Industrial/Mechanical – Bluff City, AR Nursery

ArborGen’s Nursery in Bluff City, AR has a position open for a Nursery Specialist.  This facility produces 45 million+ bareroot pine and hardwood seedlings annually.  The Nursery Specialist is required to perform all of the skilled operations at a nursery.  He/she is responsible for production goals, product quality and minimizing nursery expenses.  A specialist must be reliable, innovative, team-oriented and conscientious with a positive work attitude.

  • Operate, maintain, modify and calibrate farm tractors, agricultural equipment, irrigation system components, and other equipment used on the job.

  • Weld and fabricate metal items.

  • Maintain records including but not limited to equipment maintenance, parts inventory, safety inspections, and fuel records.

     

  • Assist in the operation and maintenance of an automatic irrigation system including pump station, below ground main lines, above-ground supply system, and digital controllers.

     

  • Assist in all phases of weed control, including herbicide application, mechanical control and hand weeding.

     

  • Assist in all phases of crop nutrition including fertilizer applications and crop tissue and soil sampling.

     

  • Wear safety personal protective equipment, maintain facility, and maintain a safe working environment.  Participate in and complete required safety training.

     

  • Supervise labor in various nursery operations.  Will be working with a contract labor crew on a daily basis during certain times of the year.

     

  • Serve as a team member and/or leader in group work improvement projects.

     

  • Work extended hours, weekends and holidays, outdoors in all types of weather conditions as required.  Examples would be weekend irrigation duty or repair, planting season, and lifting season to meet production goals.

     

  • Ability to work closely with colleagues to meat peak needs and production goals.

     

  • Adapt quickly to changing conditions including job functions.

     

  • Ability to be innovative and resourceful to accomplish goals.

     

  • Other duties and projects as assigned.

Department: Daily interaction with Supervisor (Production Coordinator and or Nursery Manager).  Frequent interaction with peers in the immediate work group.

Company:  Interaction with peers in other nursery and orchard groups across the company as related to seedling production targets.

Outside Company: May participate in outside conferences and symposia when appropriate.

  • Experience in industrial mechanics, agricultural mechanics, general construction, welding, metal fabrication, hydraulics, electrical systems, HVAC, and equipment repair/maintenance.

  • (Preferred) Associate Degree in Industrial Maintenance, Agriculture / Horticulture Engineering, Welding, Electrical, General Mechanical or 5+ years’ experience operating and maintaining industrial and/or agricultural equipment in lieu of education.   

     

  • Tractor and forklift operation experience preferred but not required.

     

  • Private Pesticide applicator license preferred, but not required.

Business Specialist – Bellville, GA Nursery

To provide general and specialized office administration services for the ArborGen Nursery.  Serve as a knowledgeable and professional contact to company and non-company individuals, either personally or by telephone.

The business specialist has full responsibility for all accounting procedures using the corporate software according to ArborGen guidelines, including purchasing, accounts payable and receivable, inventory control, petty cash, purchase orders, transmittals, invoices, and signing of coding aprons.  This position also involves the following specific responsibilities:

  • Proficiently mastering the use of the seedling sales accounting package and the SAP accounts payables program.  Monitor collection of accounts receivables and payments of accounts payables under the guidelines of the company policies and procedures.  Monitor customer and vendor accounts for accuracy and timeliness.
  • Serving as receptionist/customer contact person for the nursery.
  • Transcribe, compose and type correspondence and special reports.
  • Organize and maintain files and records according to company policy and procedure.
  • Develop computer databases, spreadsheets and presentations as needed.
  • Schedule seedling shipments, appointments and travel.
  • Wear safety personal protective equipment, maintain facility, and maintain a safe working environment.
  • Travel as needed to represent the nursery at trade shows and meetings (less than 10 days per year.
  • Maintain office supply inventory.
  • Other duties and projects as assigned.

Research Associate – Pine Tree Improvement and Seedling Quality – Bellville, GA

The Research Associate position in Bellville, GA implements and coordinates activities to support pine product development and seedling quality at ArborGen.  The research associate is frequently working outside at seedlings nurseries and research trial locations, collecting plant samples, measuring seedlings and trees, and assisting in the grafting and breeding of pine trees.

  • Collect seedling quality data at all US bareroot and container nurseries.
  • Graft & control pollination of loblolly pine trees, collection, and processing of pine cones and pollen for research activities.
  • Coordinate the installation of genetic and silvicultural field experiments as well as archiving sites including site selection, site preparation, test layout, planting, and weed control.
  • Collect measurement data on trials. Prepares establishment reports for trials and keep records of management activities
  • May supervise contract labor or employees.
  • Operate equipment such as farm tractors and aerial lifts
  • Adheres to safety policies and maintains a safe working environment.

Department: Frequent interaction with peers including participation in planning and training meetings for project progress.  Frequent interaction with Supervisor and other Research Associates.

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in forestry or natural resource management. Five or more years of experience desired but not necessary. Experience with tree improvement practices and/or forest management preferred but not required. 
  • Familiarity with basic concepts of silviculture and forest management.
  • Good communication skills with the ability to interface at all levels of management.
  • Computer proficiency is required: MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint. 
  • Familiarity with southeastern US timber markets, tree breeding, tree improvement programs and forest management highly desired.
  • This is medium to active work involving exertions of up to 50 pounds of force; work may involve climbing, stooping, crouching, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting and grasping; worker is subject to inside and outside environment, noise, vibration, working hazards, fumes, odors, dust, gasses and chemicals; visual acuity is required for experiments; requires hearing sufficient to perceive noises for diagnostic purposes.   • Travel: Travel may account for up to 50% of time and may be more frequent during various parts of the year depending on job tasks. The position requires frequent travel to seedling nurseries and remote field locations, and will be required to travel for consecutive weeks from July to December for nursery and field data collection.

Working at Heights:  This job will require occasional work operating an aerial lift at heights up to 100 feet.
